Child Services

The Ridge offers comprehensive care to children, adolescents, adults, and their families, and qualified professionals deliver all clinical services. Services that are not available within the facility may be provided through referral, consultation or contractual agreements with area professionals and other health care facilities.

The goal of The Ridge is to promote the highest level of functioning for each patient with emphasis on individual, group and family therapy provided at the least restrictive level of care. The patient's strengths, family support and discharge needs provide the basis for care–from admission to discharge.

The treatment process begins with a comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment to help diagnose any underlying medical or biochemical origins of disease. This comprehensive assessment includes psychiatric evaluation; history and physical; nursing assessment; psychosocial history; recreation therapy assessment; and patient/family educational learning assessment. As indicated by patient need, the physician may order additional assessments including psychological testing; nutritional assessment; laboratory; radiology; vocational rehab; and speech/language and hearing assessment.

An individual's treatment plan will focus on attainable short- and long-term goals established with the input of the patient, the patient's family and referring professionals, if appropriate. Active family involvement in treatment is a critical component as the patient's recovery is often correlated to healthy family interaction.

Services provided include the following therapeutic modalities: individual, group, and family therapy; therapeutic recreation; education services for children and adolescents; milieu therapy; medication education/management; integration of the 12-step philosophy with an introduction to those support groups; and discharge planning.

Discharge planning begins at the point of admission and continues throughout treatment as a multi-disciplinary effort. Discharge criteria are established during the treatment process.

Post-treatment goals are discussed as the patient moves toward achieving the criteria set for discharge. The physician and social worker coordinate the discharge arrangements with the patient, their family and the referring

professional. Referral sources are kept informed of the patient's progress from admission through discharge, as well. After care services are secured with the referring professional or, in the absence of a professional contact, every effort is made to obtain services in the community to which the patient will be returning.

Intensive Outpatient/Partial Services

The Ridge Partial Program is designed to assist individuals who require stabilization without the intensity of full, inpatient hospitalization. This service is offered for both adult and adolescent patients.

The adolescent partial patient attends programming Monday through Friday, eight hours a day when school is in session and four hours a day when school is not in session. The adult psychiatric partial patient attends programming Monday through Friday, five hours a day. The adult chemical dependency partial patient attends programming Monday through Friday, five hours a day with a two hour family education component on Saturdays.

The Ridge Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides two hours of structured programming for adult, psychiatric and chemical dependency patients, during day and evening hours. Designed as both an alternative to inpatient and partial hospitalization–as well as a key component in The Ridge continuum of care–intensive outpatient services include group therapy, family therapy and medication management.

Intensive Outpatient Programs require participation four to six days a week, two hours a day. Voyages, the adult psychiatric IOP, runs Monday through Friday from 10 am to 12 noon. Steps to Recovery, the adult chemical dependency IOP, runs Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon. The Evening Addictive Disease Program runs Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 pm to 8 pm with family education on Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon.

Chemical Dependency

The Ridge approach to chemical dependency or addiction provides the first step to a lifelong process of recovery by providing medical detoxification as well as stabilization and evaluation. The process begins with a comprehensive evaluation to help diagnose any underlying medical or biochemical origins of disease.

The Ridge’s detoxification protocol is based on the most up-to-date methods designed to keep patients as comfortable as possible and engage them in the treatment process quickly to provide support and a sense of belonging. Following detoxification, an inpatient alcohol and/or drug treatment program or dual diagnosis treatment (for those with both chemical and psychiatric disorders) may be recommended.

Individualized treatment plans focus on attainable short- and long-term goals established with the input of the patient, the patient’s family and referring professionals, if appropriate. Active family involvement in treatment is a critical component as the patient’s recovery is often correlated to healthy family interaction. Staff members from a number of disciplines cooperate to develop and work toward the success of this individualized treatment plan.

Treatment methods used in our continuum of care embrace a bio-psycho-social approach with the use of medication education and management; individual and group therapy; family therapy, disease and recovery education; integration of the 12-step philosophy and introduction to those support groups; the development of life skills and recreation; and discharge planning. Specialty groups and consultations are also added to the treatment plan as necessary. Emphasis is placed on learning relapse prevention skills.

Referral sources are kept informed of the patient’s progress from admission through discharge–because the continuity of care is critical to treatment success. After-care services are secured with the referring professional. In the absence of a professional contact, every effort is made to obtain services in the community to which the patient will be returning. After-care support groups are critical to a patient’s ongoing success, and The Ridge staff will assist with finding sponsors and locating support groups.

The facility includes a gymnasium with weight equipment, swimming pool, group areas, and educational classrooms. Our semi-private bedrooms are equipped with a private bathroom and modest furnishings, including a writing desk, bed, and wardrobe.

Patient safety is a priority, and The Ridge staff is trained to follow specific procedures to ensure a safe environment for all patients.

Adult Services

The Ridge Adult Program provides services for general psychiatric illnesses, as well as dual diagnosis (mental illness with chemical dependency).

Specialized treatment services, serving people 18 or older, are provided as an integrated part of our general adult programming. Hospital services include an acute inpatient psychiatric program designed for adults who are at risk of harm to themselves or others, require crisis intervention, stabilization or detoxification, and are unable to function in a less restrictive setting.

The adult treatment program is a 28-bed unit, operating 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

The Ridge’s integrated program is designed to effectively treat a wide range of psychiatric and behavioral issues including mood (depression and bipolar) disorders, anxiety (posttraumatic stress and panic) disorders, disorders caused by chemical imbalance, and others such as obsessive-compulsive and adjustment disorders. Individualized treatment plans are developed based on each patient’s case history and data gathered from in-depth evaluations and assessments conducted during the initial assessment process.

The Ridge Adult Program uses individual, group and family psychotherapy, cognitive/behavioral, psycho-educational, recreation activities, and pharmacotherapy. Specialty groups and consultations are also added to the treatment plan, as necessary, to address issues such as eating disorders, compulsive behaviors, trauma, codependency, depression, and anxiety disorders.

Staff members from a number of disciplines cooperate to develop and work toward the success of this individualized treatment plan for each patient. Inpatient, partial and intensive outpatient services utilize this multidisciplinary team model.

Referral sources are kept informed of the patient’s progress from admission through discharge–because the continuity of care is critical to treatment success. Adolescent Services

The Ridge has been a leader in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adolescents for more than 20 years.

Inpatient treatment is designed for adolescents, ages 12 through 17, who are at risk to themselves or others; who require crisis intervention and stabilization; and who are unable to function at home, school, or in a less restrictive setting.

The Ridge offers general psychiatric services as well as dual diagnosis and the specialized treatment for eating disorders.

The Ridge addresses adolescent addictions with instruction in the 12-step model. The program is directed toward helping adolescents understand the benefits and the consequences of their choices. The inpatient adolescent program at The Ridge provides a safe, positive and therapeutic environment that enables the adolescent to work through the challenges and issues that led to hospitalization.

Individualized treatment plans are developed based on a thorough assessment of the adolescent’s needs. The plan focuses on attainable short- and long-term goals established with the input of the patient, the patient’s family or guardian, and referring professionals, as indicated. Active family involvement in treatment is a critical component as the patient’s recovery is often correlated to healthy family interaction.

Education is provided to all patients of school age as required by the Kentucky Department of Education. Services are furnished by the Fayette County Board of Education’s fully certified teachers.

Staff members from a number of disciplines cooperate to develop and work toward the success of the individualized treatment plan for each adolescent.

Treatment methods used in our continuum of care embrace a bio-psycho-social approach, with the use of medication education and management, individual and group therapy, family therapy, disease and recovery education, integration of the 12-Step philosophy, and the development of life skills and recreation and discharge planning.

Adolescent Recovery Center

The Ridge always has been a leader in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adolescents. We are pleased to introduce our newest service designed specifically for adolescents with drug and alcohol problems–the Adolescent Recovery Center (ARC).

The ARC at The Ridge is designed to serve adolescents, ages 12 to 17 (or 18 if still in high school), suffering from the disease of chemical dependency. The ARC specializes in the treatment of adolescents whose chemical dependency problems are manifested primarily through legal problems, school difficulties, relationship problems and an inability to maintain sobriety. The primary treatment goal is to enable participants to return to their communities clean and sober with the knowledge and commitment to maintain sobriety and a healthy lifestyle.

The ARC offers 18 beds in semi-private rooms located on a self-contained unit. The treatment team is made up of highly qualified personnel including a director, registered nurses and certified alcohol and drug counselors. All ARC services are reimbursable by Medicaid and commercial insurance. The expected length of stay is 28 days, but lengths of stay are modified to best serve each participant’s situation and needs.

Treatment at the ARC focuses on building positive relationships in a program geared toward ego building and coping strategies that promote self-reliance, personal responsibility and problem-solving. The program model utilizes the 12-step approach of Alcoholics Anonymous and a cognitive behavioral approach, which includes individual and family group therapy. Self-help groups are encouraged, as is the involvement of the participant’s family and/or guardian.

In addition, participants will attend school at The Ridge during the academic year with certified teachers that follow the curriculum of the Fayette County School System.

Child Services

The Ridge Child unit offers specialized treatment for children, ages 5 through 11, who are experiencing severe emotional or behavioral problems. Through a structured and individualized program, children learn how to deal with their emotions and channel their energies positively. The Ridge provides crisis stabilization, psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing, medical evaluation, group therapy, family therapy, play therapy, parenting education, educational testing, in-house certified teachers, and consultation with home schooling.

Staff members from a number of disciplines cooperate to develop and work toward the success of the individualized treatment plan for each child.

Children receive treatment for a wide range of psychiatric problems such as depression, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, disordered thinking, or plans to harm themselves or others. Treatment focuses on developing self-control skills, strengthening self-esteem, resolving family conflicts, and developing basic social skills. Treatment often includes medication management with the goal of providing the medical intervention needed to diminish the symptoms of the illness. Resolving the immediate crisis and integrating the child back into the home, school or other long-term program is our central priority.

Individualized treatment plans are developed based on a thorough assessment of the child's needs. The plan focuses on attainable short- and long-term goals established with the input of the patient, the patient's family or guardian, and referring professionals, as indicated. Treatment methods used in our continuum of care embrace a bio-psycho-social approach, with the use of medication education and management, individual and group therapy, family therapy, recreation, and discharge planning.
