Signs and Symptoms of Eating Disorders

Since we live in a culture today where most people seem concerned about weight and diet, it can be difficult to tell what behavior is normal and what can become dangerous.  People with eating disorders will manifest several of the behaviors characterized below. Therefore, it is important to be able to identify common signs and symptoms of a person who may have an eating disorder.

 

A Person With Anorexia...

 ü     Skips meals or takes tiny portions

ü      Is thin and continues to get thinner

ü      Will not eat in front of others

ü      Diets even though she/he is not overweight

ü      Eats in ritualistic ways and/or mixes strange food combinations

ü      Loses or experiences thinning hair

ü      Talks excessively about food, cooking or dieting

ü      Reads food labels religiously

  

A Person With Bulimia...

ü       Purges food through vomiting, laxatives, or excessive exercise

ü       Engages in binge eating

ü       Uses the bathroom frequently after meals

ü       Has depressed moods

ü       Reacts to stress by overeating

ü       Experiences frequent fluctuations in weight

  

A Person With A Binge Eating Disorder...

ü       Overeats to the point of feeling uncomfortable

ü       Rapidly consumes food

ü       Eats large amounts of food when not physically hungry

ü       Often eats alone due to shame or embarrassment

ü       Has a history of marked weight fluctuations

ü       Binge eating without purging
