THE RIDGE YOUTH EATING DISORDERS PROGRAM
The
Ridge Youth Eating Disorders Program (EDP) is an addition to
The Ridge Youth Services continuum of care. This program has been
developed to provide longer-term treatment for youth aged 12 to 17
in a structured, therapeutic milieu. The EDP operates as a program
of The Ridge Behavioral Health System, a comprehensive behavioral
health service provider operating a full continuum of mental health
and addictive disease services for patients of Kentucky and
contiguous states. The Ridge is a licensed acute care hospital in
Lexington, Kentucky.
The EDP is designed to treat youth, ages 12 to 17, or 18 if
still in high school. This target population is suffering from
an eating disorder, which has proven refractory to short-term
intensive treatment programs and unmanageable in less-intensive
treatment settings. Patients must present with symptoms
indicative of a DSM-IV condition as evidenced by the need for
treatment for an eating disorder. The Ridge EDP specializes in
the habilitation of youth whose eating disorder pathology is
manifested chiefly by medical problems, alteration in body
image, relationship problems and a lack of insight into the
severity of their illness.
The primary treatment goal is to provide services that will
enable the program participants to return to their communities
with an improved self-image, physical health, with less
restrictive treatment requirements and the knowledge and
commitment of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The expected
length of stay is 45 days. Any variability in length of stay
will be determined by the treatment team. Required intensity of
the patient’s community support system will be considered.
